Fei Liu wins Bridal Design of the Year 2014 AwardDesigner Fei Liu’s Aurora ring has won The Houlden Group’s inaugural Bridal Designer of the Year award against some stiff competition.
This year’s Jewellery and Watch Show Birmingham featured a new initiative in collaboration with the trading consortium The Houlden Group. The partnership launched the Bridal Designer of the Year Award competition, which focused on the diamond bridal business and its commercial viability. The winner, chosen by Houlden members, was designer Fei Liu, whose Aurora ring took the coveted first place nomination.
The competition’s goal was to showcase, encourage and challenge the current top talented designers with a task of designing an engagement and wedding ring set that would fall within one of two categories. Category one included pieces with a retail price between £1500 to £3000; category two’s range was £3000 to £5000. Designers were required to create sets that were commercially viable with a 2.3% mark-up including VAT. The other technical parameters of the competition stated that the diamond set had to be made in either 18ct yellow gold or platinum.
The winning ring, designed by Fei Lui, was inspired by the ethereal beauty and movement of the Northern Lights. The Aurora ring featured illuminating swirls of polished platinum that gracefully embraced the centre diamond, creating a style with both a modern feel and classical touch. The ring, and accompanying wedding band, was applauded for its exquisite understated look and modern design which exuded beauty and femininity.
Designer Fei Lui is no stranger to the experience of winning awards. His collections have frequently been recognised for their technical excellence and innovativeness and are currently featured in the F&L Designer Guides. This newest title of Bridal Designer of the Year 2014 is yet another commendation and endorsement of his unique talent.
