The V&A’s upcoming exhibition will explore the history of the pearl from the age of the early Roman Empire to the present day. The exhibition, which is the result of a partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority, has been installed with the assistance of experts in the field of Middle Eastern jewellery and artistic culture such as Melanie Eddy.

The Qatar Museums Authority, who own the finest collection of natural pearl jewellery, has collaborated with the V&A and their Conservation Department to collate an exhibition which will display the story and history of the exotic pearl. Independent designer Melanie Eddy, who actively participates with Middle Eastern cultural advancement programs such as Turquoise Mountain and Future Brilliance, has proven invaluable in the exhibition’s installation process.

Pearls have been treasured for their exquisite beauty which has been synonymous with royalty, wealth and prestige across many cultures for centuries. The V&A’s exhibition will explore the history of natural pearls from early Roman times to the present day.

The show’s highlight will be the display of spectacular jewellery showcasing the variety of different shapes and colours of the gem. In particular, famous pieces such as the 16th-century Salamander pendant, a group of stunning tiaras worn by European royalty and a pair of drop pearl earrings once owned by Elizabeth Taylor will be featured at the event.

The exhibition will also display examples of natural pearls used to create a variety of decorative items. Paintings and photographs will document of the progression of the pearl’s role in both Eastern and Western fashion and their symbolism.

Bespoke engagement ring designers such as Melanie Eddy, who helped with the exhibition’s installation, and independent jewellers have seen an increase in popularity of pearls for modern day pieces. This exhibition of the magnificent and exotic pearl throughout history will showcase the gems previous and potential beauty to visitors with the unique opportunity to view the Qatar Museums Authority’s spectacular collection.

Pearls: a V&A and Qatar Museums Authority Exhibition will run from September 21st 2013 to January 19th 2014.
