Different Shades of Yellow Diamonds

Yellow diamond engagement rings featuring fancy coloured yellow stones come in a wide array of shades.

I am confused. There is so much contradictory information regarding yellow diamond engagement rings that it leaves your head spinning! F and I got into a heated discussion the other night over yellow diamonds and, in hindsight, although I doubt either of us would ever stubbornly admit it, we were both wrong and we were both right all at the same time.

Basically, we read that yellow diamonds, because they are more frequently found, can be more affordable than the traditional white ones, however, they are also rarer and consequently more expensive. What? This information simply did not compute with either of us.

We spoke with some of our designers who have created exquisite yellow diamond engagement rings in the past. Infuriatingly, they said that what we had read was correct. Again, ‘what?’ was my only response.

Thankfully they went on to clarify that like with the colour yellow itself, yellow diamonds come in a variety of shades, and its shade is what dictates the value of the stone as some are rarer than others. Ironically, it can be seen as the ‘grey area’ concerning yellow diamonds. This now seemed embarrassingly obvious and I was gratefully that they were willing to elaborate further.

A ‘fancy vivid yellow orange’ diamond next to a ‘canary’ diamond: the colours differ significantly

Fancy Vivid Yellow

This is the boldest shade of yellow diamond you can get. A sharp, crisp, glowing mid-day sunlight kind of yellow. All the rage nowadays as people break from the mould of the traditional clear diamond. The brightness of the yellow owes a debt of gratitude to intense exposure to nitrogen. In short, you can’t really fake this kind of hue.

It is even said that a seasoned jeweller may never handle or sell one of these yellow gems in their lifetime.

Fancy Intense Yellow

The yellow of this diamond is not nearly as intense as that of the Vivid. The intensity is actually a far more subtle yellow, perhaps easier on the eye, you might say. But still strong enough to capture a room’s attention when you walk in to announce your engagement to the love of your life with this dazzling yellow diamond engagement ring.

Fancy Yellow

Fancy Yellow diamonds place much further down the scale and there is a noticeable reduction in yellow intensity. This is a more watered down shade, a pale golden tint, the colour of champagne which can in fact be a more preferred, understated look for a yellow engagement ring.

Fancy Light Yellow

The Fancy Light maintains a soft, neutral, radiating beauty. It is a more delicate, less obtrusive shade. These fancy light yellow diamond rings are all on the more affordable end of the scale.

Y-Z, W-X, U-V, S-T

These diamonds are all of a similar, more subtle yellow. They do not hold the dazzling brilliance or glaring sunshine of the vivid or the intense yellow diamonds, just a beautiful subtlety. These are however caught in the awkward no-man’s land between pristine “perfect” clear diamonds and wondrous bold colour.

Yellow diamond engagement rings seem to be an option for those who want bold and brilliant or for those who prefer soft and delicate. F and I are amazed to find one stone that seems to suit all taste preferences and even budgets. Our Favourite Designers have harnessed the beauty of these gems, in all their different shades, in stunningly unique and splendid ways.
